Ukrzaliznytsia and DB Engineering & Consulting signed a contract on providing advisory services in in the field of energy efficiency for the Ukrainian rail perator.
Under the agreement, DB Engineering & Consulting will prepare an investment plan for energy efficiency and will elaborate a new energy management system for Ukrzaliznytsia.
The Ukrainian company should form an energy efficiency investment plan in accordance with the obligations within the framework of cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development under the Dolynska – Mykolaiv – Kolosivka rail electrification project.
“We have already signed an agreement and in the near future we will start cooperating with the German consultant who will provide Ukrzaliznytsia with professional advice on energy efficiency. The railway needs modern approaches to reduce operating costs, increase the reliability of railway transport and increase its environment performance. And this is not only a requirement of our financial partners, but also for tackling climate change,” Oleksandr Kamyshin, the Acting Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia said.
Under the terms of the contract, DB Engineering & Consulting, must prepare an energy efficiency investment plan within 1.5 years, identifying priority measures and projects. The recommendations and a roadmap for obtaining the ISO 50001 certificate will also be developed and a new Ukrzaliznytsia energy management system will be presented.
To implement the agreement with the DB, the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund (SSF) agreed to provide Ukrzaliznytsia with a non-refundable grant in the amount of about EUR 370,000 which fully covers the amount of payment for the consultant’s services.
DB Engineering & Consulting has been selected as a consultant to Ukrzaliznytsia based on the results of the tender procurement according to the EBRD rules and procedures. The terms of reference for the provision of consulting services were developed by the EBRD together with Ukrzaliznytsia specialists.
Improving energy efficiency is a priority for Ukrzaliznytsia while a team of the Ministry of Infrastructure initiated the projects to electrify the railway infrastructure and optimise the purchase of electricity directly from the Energoatom, the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine.
The readiness to adopt the German infrastructure management experience was discussed at a meeting on August 13, 2021 between the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Alexander Kubrakov and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen. The Minister announced the possibility of further involvement of DB in the management processes of Ukrzaliznytsia.
