Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRCL) awarded Systra a contract for the first phase of Surat metro project.
The project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the German development bank KfW. Systra Group is the lead partner of the joint venture with Egis Rail and Aecom Asia Company Ltd. It is scheduled to last for 42 months.
Systra will be responsible for the review the detailed project report, the design review, procurement assistance for civil and system works, construction supervision for civil and system works, system integration, overall project management, safety and quality check, and testing and commissioning.
The Phase I of Surat metro includes two rail corridors with a combined length of 40.35 km and a total of 38 stations.
The first corridor will link Sarthana and Dream City with its 6 underground and 14 elevated stations. The Corridor 2 will be constructed between Bhesan and Saroli and will have 18 elevated stations.
The metro network will be designed for a speed of 90 km/h with a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h. The two new corridors will be equipped with the Continuous Automatic Train Control System (CATC) with cab signalling and ATO (Automatic Train Operation), and ATS (Automatic Train Supervision) sub-systems using radio communication between track side and train. The telecommunication and train control system will be integrated with fibre optic cable, SCADA, train radio, PA System.
The metro system will be equipped with automatic fare collection (AFC) system with smart cards and platform screen doors.
Last year, GMRCL has launched a tender for the construction of 11.6 km metro line under the first phase of the project.
The Phase I of city’s metro network is expected to be completed within three years and was estimated at USD 1.7 billion.
The city of Surat, with a population of around 7 million, is in the state of Gujarat and is one of the largest cities in western India. The development of the metro transport is essential to cut the emissions and to promote sustainable transport.
