Chennai Metro Rail Limited awarded a Rs.1,147 crore (USD 155 million) contract to a joint venture comprising Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and KEC International Limited (KEC), for the construction of a 7.95 km elevated viaduct and 9 elevated stations.
51 per cent representing USD 79 million is the share of HCC in the joint venture.
The contract is part of the second phase of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro project.
The contract includes civil works, architectural works, plumbing and drainage and temporary services required by Chennai Metro company. The work is expected to be completed in 36 months.
“We are delighted with the new order wins amidst challenging times. The metro order widens our presence in the urban infrastructure sector. With this order, we are currently executing six metro and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) projects,” Vimal Kejriwal, CEO of KEC International Ltd said.
The Corridor 4 will have a length of 26,1 km of which 16 km of elevated line and 10.1 km underground line, which will provide metro connection from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass. The line will have 30 stations with 18 elevated and 12 underground stations.
The nine elevated stations include Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, Poonamallee Bypass.
Currently, HCC is executing a section of Mumbai Metro Line 3, involving 3.1 km–long twin bored tunnels including four underground stations, a 4 km underground line with a station in Delhi, two contracts for Pune Metro involving 17 elevated stations and a section of Bangalore Metro project involving 6.34 km of elevated corridor including a road-cum-rail flyover and 5 metro stations.
In February 2019, the city has put into commercial operation the AG-DMS – Washermanpet metro section on the Blue Line, completing the first phase of the metro system with a total length of 45 km.
Chennai Metro is currently implementing the 9 km line with 8 stations as the extension of the first phase from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. The project includes a six elevated and two underground stations.
The second phase of metro expansion consisting of three corridors totalling 119 km served by 128 stations. The Corridor 3 will be 45.8 km long from Madhavaram to Sipcot, the Corridor 4 and the 47 km Corridor 5 linking Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
