The rail infrastructure manager SŽ selected the consortium of Sudop Praha and Moravia Consult for the feasibility study of Prague – Hradec Králové – Wrocław high speed-rail connecting Czechia and Poland.
CZK 12.6 million (EUR 493,650) is the value of the contract and the study must be completed within 18 months.
The main goal of the feasibility study is to design the route of the future high-speed line between Prague, Hradec Králové and the state border with Poland towards Wrocław with a branch to Pardubice.
Its study will assess the overall technical design including whether the line will also be used for freight transport or to what extent the current railway network could be integrated into the plans of the route. The design will also be optimised in relation to territorial limits, the connection options to the Prague, Hradec Králové and Pardubice nodes, as well as to the entire high-speed rail network and other main lines.
The beginning of the section will follow the Polabí HSR (on the Prague – Běchovice – Poříčany route) on the Hořany branch. Technically, the section along the state border of the Czech Republic with Poland will be solved, while the solution on the Czech side must follow the Polish studies.
The overall parts of the project, especially the economic efficiency of the project, will be addressed together with the Polish side along the entire length of the corridor between Prague and Wrocław.
On the Polish side, SŽ will closely work with CPK (Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, the Central Transport Hub), responsible for the preparation of the new railway lines, the high-speed connections and the central airport in Poland.
The RS5 Prague – Hradec Králové – Wrocław high speed rail line will connect the Czech capital with the East Bohemian agglomerations to Wrocław including to Warsaw. It is possible to reach 90 minutes to Wrocław and about 3 hours to Warsaw. The considered branch to Pardubice will enable the transfer of the long-distance transport from today’s railway corridor to the high-speed line.
The Prague East terminal, which can also be used for trains between Prague and Brno, will ensure the possibility of transfer in the direction of Brno and other capitals of the Visegrad Group countries (V4).
The project is part of country’s high-speed rail development strategy with overall plans unveiling three priority high-speed projects. The project of the first line from Prague to Brno is in implementation as the Prague – Běchovice – Poříčany (VRT Polabí) section is common for both lines. The next section is a possible extension to Hradec Králové with a branch to Pardubice, which together with the modernisation of the existing railway network can also ensure a high quality and important international connection. The implementation of the last section from Hradec Králové to the state border with Poland will make it possible to significantly reduce the travel times.
