The Research and production corporation United Wagon Company has delivered a new batch of timber flat cars to the rail operator Arkhbum, a subsidiary of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill.
The Tikhvin timber flat car features a high load capacity of 74 tonnes and a body volume increased to 122 m3, resulting in a reduced cost per tonne of cargo according to the current rail tariff schedule.
The special design of the side rack base minimizes unused space when transporting freight. Openings in the end wall allow unobstructed visual inspection of the car.
The flat cars are equipped with 25 – tonne axle load bogies, of model 18-9855, featuring high operational reliability. The maintenance interval of the car is up to 1 million km, or 8 years. By comparison, most common flat cars running on the 1520-mm gauge have their first scheduled service upon completing 210,000 km, or 3 years after construction. The service life of the Tikhvin car is 40 years.
The 40-foot-long timber flat cars, model 13-6852-02, form a significant part of the Arkhangelsk operator’s fleet of timber flat cars. The Arkhbum decision to acquire an additional batch of cars was based on company’s positive experience with the previously supplied cars of this model.
In 2020, company’s freight rail traffic increased by 19.1% year – on – year and expanded its fleet to 2,500 cars. according to Vasily Knyrevich, the CEO of Arkhbum, the development plans include the expansion and modernisation of its rolling stock fleet “mainly with new generation railcars and strengthen cooperation with United Wagon Company.”
In February 2020, Arkhbum ordered from UWC 25 flat cars for the transport of timber. The new cars were delivered last year and was added to the 305 cars supplied by UWC. In September, the operator has received another batch of freight cars of model 13-6852-02.
