Siemens Mobility and DB Cargo Polska signed a contract for the delivery of four additional Vectron locomotives to help the operator become the Green Carrier.
These locos will be powered with 100% renewable sources according to recent agreement between DB Cargo Polska and PKP Energetyka Kariera for the green railway and climate protection in Poland.
In February, PKP Energetyka and the rail operator agreed to participate in the Green Railway Programme initiated by the Railway Energy Efficiency Centre (CEEK). To strengthen the railway’s green footprint, leading companies in the sector are actively working within CEEK to increase the amount of green energy in the Polish traction network, which today accounts for 12%.
The letter of intent signed by the two companies involves the development of a model to acquire energy from renewable sources to power transport provided by DB Cargo Polska. As a result of this cooperation, half of the traction energy supplied to the carrier by PKP Energetyka will be environmentally friendly since January 2022 already, and ultimately from January 2023, it will be 100% of the volume.
Through this project, DB Cargo Polska will become a Green Carrier supplying its electric rolling stock entirely with energy from RES.
The parties undertake to exchange knowledge, experience and information in order to develop the most beneficial solutions for the use of electricity coming from RES to provide railway transport.
“We fully realise that our business does not remain without an impact on the environment in which we operate. Being aware of this and meeting our customers’ expectations, we have developed two products within the DB Cargo Group, ‘DBeco plus’ and ‘DBeco neutral’,” Marek Staszek, the CEO of DB Cargo Polska said.
DBeco plus allows the customers to have their transports supplied with electricity from RES. DBeco plus is currently available in Germany and Austria and it is expected that the cooperation with PKP Energetyka will bring this offer on the Polish railway market.
With the DBeco neutral product, the company offsets CO2 emissions which could not be avoided in transport, such as the emissions produced by lorries in pre-carriage and onward carriage. The offer complements DBeco plus. The entire process is monitored and certified by TÜV SÜD.
