Buenos Aires metro transport company, SBASE, awarded Siemens Mobility a contract for the supply and install a Communications-Based Train Control system (CBTC) on the Buenos Aires Line D.
The CBTC signalling system will be installed on the entire 11 km-long line served by 16 stations between the Catedral, located in the historic Plaza de Mayo, and Congreso de Tucumán, situted in the northern part, close to the borders of the city of Buenos Aires.
The system will include the installation of onboard units on 24 existing cars, as well as a radio system, electronic interlockings, and wayside equipment. All elements of the system will be coordinated by a newly established operations control center. As part of the Buenos Aires Line D renovation project, Siemens Mobility will also provide a passenger information system.

The radio based CBTC technology will allow greater frequency of train arrivals and is able to accommodate more passengers on the metro system. The new system provides real-time data on vehicle position and speed condition and locates each train on the tracks and controls the train speed. The CBTC solution Trainguard MT improves the safety for riders and employees and is also providing the ability for continuous updates on system status that results in fewer delays and up-to-date travel information.
For Siemens Mobility this is the third awarded contract to install the CBTC signalling technology on Buenos Aires metro system.
Under the renovation plan for the D metro Line, SBASE has modernised all the trains by installing air conditioning systems. Currently, the trains running on four of the six metro lines have been equipped with air conditioning system.
The modernisation project for the Line D is expected to be completed in 2023 allowing an increase of 30% in train running and a 15% travel time reduction. Currently, the line is carrying 320,000 passengers and after works will be completed, the ridership will increase by 67,000 passengers per day.
