The European Commission has approved a EUR 6 million of state aid to Treeden Group for the construction of a transshipment terminal in Poland.
The project is expected to be completed within 24 months since it started. The works will receive funds under the Regional Operational Programme of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship for 2014–2020.
The Treeden Group offers specialised transshipment , storage, handling of oversized shipments at Wola Baranowska station.
The new transhipment terminal will have a storage area of 7690 m2 and its yard will cover 58,451m2. The project includes the construction of the broad and standard gauge railway infrastructure, transshipment warehouse with technical facilities.
The new terminal will be constructed at Wola Baranowska station owned by PKP LHS which operates Poland’s longest broad-gauge line. The station is situated on the 400-km No. 65 board gauge line, providing transport connection between Poland and Ukraine and further to the regional intergovernmental organization CIS. Located at the train station in the Podkarpackie region, the terminal is expected to increase the volume of transported goods that pass through the area.
The transshipment terminal will allow modal shift from road to rail and will storage bulk materials and containers. The state aid approval is also beneficial for the environment and for mobility as it supports rail transport, which is less polluting than road transport, while also decreasing road congestion.
The Commission took into consideration the suboptimal situation of the Podkarpackie Province with regard to intermodal transport and the unique character in Europe of the broad gauge track No. 65 as an important cargo handling line connecting the Polish with the Ukrainian border.
The European Commission also found that the support measure is necessary, as otherwise market operators would not have sufficient incentives to carry out investments into such infrastructure.
ERDF funds will be used to build the new transshipment terminal in Poland which will promote modal shifting.
