Warsaw commuter railway operator SKM and Newag signed the contract for the delivery of 21 electric multiple units (EMUs) by the end of 2022.
The president of SKM Warszawa, Alan Beroud, and the CEO of Newag, Zbigniew Konieczek, signed a contract for the supply of 21 Impuls 2 EMUs. The contract also includes inspections and repairs for a period of 7 years and training employees.
The Polish manufacturer will deliver 15 five-car trains with a length of 91.9 metres, while 6 four-car EMUs will have a length of 75.6 metres. The contract was awarded by SKM Warszawa in March.
The first trainsets will enter commercial services at the beginning of 2022 and in November 2022, all the fleet will be operational.
EUR 147 million (PLN 668 million) is the total value of the contract which has received a EU funding of EUR 44.6 million (PLN 202.6 million) under the OP Infrastructure and Environment 2014–2020 through the Priority V: “Development of rail transport in Poland”, Measure 5.2 Development of railway transport outside TEN-T (rolling stock). EUR 5 billion is the envisaged pool of funds available for this Priority. This priority axis is financed through a single fund (Cohesion Fund).
“This is good news for the residents of Warsaw and the surrounding towns, especially those who are daily commuting. The new Impuls 2 trains from Newag will increase the comfort and strengthen SKM network that enjoys the greatest interest of passengers. We also plan to use the new rolling stock, after completion of renovation and modernization works within the Warsaw Railway Junction, to launch further connections,” Alan Beroud said.
The new electric multiple units will be equipped with monitoring and a modern passenger information system, ticket machines, Wi-Fi, USB chargers and AEDs. The air-conditioned trains will be fully adapted to passengers with reduced mobility.
