By 2021, ZSSK Cargo will complete the conversion of 2,050 S-type wagons by retrofitting their braking system with composite brake blocks. The project has received a EUR 512,000 European funding for this project.
The completion of the project will reduce the rail noise by up to 10 dB, which represents a 50 % reduction in audible noise for humans.
Up to 26% of operator’s wagon fleet or 2,752 wagons will be retrofitted with LL-brake blocks. These wagons should be prioritised for use in international transport throughout the EU, including TEN-T Core Network Corridors, particularly on the Rhine-Danube, Baltic-Adriatic and Orient/East-Med, actually crossing Slovakia.
Before starting wagon retrofitting programme in 2019, ZSSK Cargo had 702 silent wagons, of which 550 were newly built wagons, already equipped with K blocks and 152 vehicles were converted into LL blocks.
To reduce the costs, wagons’ conversion activities take place at Slovakian railway operator’s repair workshops and it will be needed, external workshops will be used.
