A consortium comprising Infra and Railway Institute (IK) won a PLN 1.8 million (EUR 398,533) contract to draft a feasibility study on the development of the railway infrastructure in Małopolska Region.
The contract was signed with the Polish railway infrastructure manager, PKP PLK, and the Marshal’s Office of the Małopolska Region. The study is expected to be completed in 2023.
The consortium will study and assess the existing railway traffic and the possibility of its development and in collaboration with the local authorities will identify the most important railway investment projects across the region.
The specialists will check the possibility and profitability of the construction of additional tracks from Kraków to Batowice, Wieliczka, Kozłów and Krzeszowice.The study will also concern the construction of additional tracks between Podłęże and Tarnów as well as Nowy Targ and Zakopane. The study will consider the construction of new railway lines from Krakow towards Myślenice, Niepołomice and Olkusz, as well as from Zastów to Kazimierza Wielka, and from Kraków Airport to Zabierzów.
The possibility of running passenger trains on Krakow peripheral network, currently used primarily by freight trains, will be examined.
“The contract is an important step for the development of the railway infrastructure in our region. Railway transport is the choice of Lesser Poland region and constantly increasing the connections and comfort of travel is our priority,” said the Deputy Marshal of the Małopolska Region, Łukasz Smółka.
Currently, PKP PLK is modernising the railway network in Małopolska Region. Some of the projects are expected to be completed in 2021 when, thanks to new additional tracks, new stops and bridges will increase the capacity and railway connections across the region.
