On March 27, track laying work has started in Vientiane for the construction of the 414 km railway line from China to Laos. Each day, the laying machine lays 2 km-tracks per day, exceeding the required average daily laying progress of 1.5 km.
The project is performed by Laos-China Railway Co, a joint venture responsible for the construction and operation of the railway connection between the two countries.
Under the project, tunnels totaling 198 km and 62 km of bridges will be constructed.
In Laos, the new line will be constructed from Boten, at the border, to Vientiane, crossing Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. In the north, the line will have a connection with Chinese railway network in Mohan, through the Yuxi – Mohan railway line.
In south, the line will have a connection with the existing metre-gauge railway in Thanaleng.
Construction works have started at the beginning of 2017 and in 2019, the civil works including tunnels and bridges were completed.
The project is expected to be completed in 2021, when the trains will be able to run at speeds of 160 km/h.
