70% of Moscow metro trains are of new generation

Moscow metro trainThe Moscow Department of Transport has announced that 70% of Moscow metro train fleet has been replaced with new trainsets.

The metro operator owns 6,217 metro cars out of which 4,351 are of the new generation and by 2023, the average age of the metro trains is going to decrease from 22.5 to 10 years.

In the past 15 months, the city has been purchasing only Moscow-2020 cars which are significantly wider than the existing trains. The cars are equipped with the latest passenger information system, with smoke detectors and interactive displays for navigation. There are also two climate control units with air disinfection in each car and the number of USB-ports has increased fivefold.

In 2020, the Russian capital has put into operation 337 new metro cars “which are superior not only to the previous generation of trains of the Moscow Metro but also to the world analogs,” Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport said.

In the next few years, the Moscow metro train fleet will benefit 1,300 brand-new Moskva-2020 carriages which will make up to 80% of the rolling stock by 2023.

In the last decade, the city has started to renew its metro fleet and from 2017, innovative Moskva train entered service. The Moskva train was launched five years ago, the Moskva-2020 trains were introduced in October 2020.

In addition, the city is renewing its tram fleet and in the last five years 461 modern trams with a total capacity of 30 thousand passenger seats entered services. Thanks to the life cycle contracts, the vehicles are under complete control 24/7 as the service and repairs are provided by the manufacturer throughout the 30 years. This has eliminated problems with the vehicles operating on the lines. After the transfer of trams under the supervision of the Moscow Metro, repair works are carried out without closing the lines on weekdays.

The plans for 2022 include the introduction of up to 100 new trams, the renovation of 90 km of the contact line and feeder cables, the renewal of 20 switches and the overhaul of 70% of the tram track performed by Moscow Metro under a decision announced at the end of 2020 to manage the city’s tram system. The single management and applying strict metro standards aim at increasing speed, enhancing maintenance, and improving passenger’s experience of the Moscow tram.

This year Moscow also plans to develop a plan to build a new tram route on the Akadimika Sakharova Avenue. Once the project is finalised, it will enter public consultation. According to the estimations, this new tramline will help to unload one of the busiest metro stations in Moscow – Komsomolskaya – up to 50 thousand people and more than 125 thousand people will use it daily.

Moscow is expanding its public transport system by constructing new metro and tram lines and modernising the existing infrastructure to reduce the emissions from road transport and to provide increased connectivity throughout its metropolitan area.
