75% of the civil works construction on Mombasa – Malaba are already completed, and 200 km of rail track having been laid, Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina announced.
“This project is of very significant importance especially to the private sector. It will transform the transport system and make it more efficient. It is responsive to the needs of the private sector through creation of an enabling environment for you to thrive. Recently we advertised for a transaction advisor to assist in the procurement of a competent operator for the Mombasa to Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway,” he said.
The Mombasa –Malaba section is being developed in two phases. The first phase (Mombasa – Nairobi) is under development having commenced in December 2014, and is due to be operational by July 2017. The second phase includes the 490 km line from Nairobi to Malaba for which on March 2016, the Cabinet approved the signing of commercial contracts between Kenya Railways and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC).
The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line starts at the Port city of Mombasa on the shores of the Indian Ocean and runs along the Northern corridor through Nairobi, Kisumu to Malaba. The first phase of the Standard Gauge Railaway line traverses Kwale, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos and Kajiado from Mombasa and culminates in Nairobi.
