Wellington: the last 83 new EMUs enter services

matangi-trainWellington’s Metlink commuter rail operator has put into service the last 83 Matangi 2-car units, delivered by Hyundai Rotem. “This marks the end of a nine year project to bring the entire train fleet into the 21st century, that began with refurbished carriages on the Wairarapa service in 2007 and finished with last of the 83 Matangi 2-car units entering service,” Paul Swain, Greater Wellington Regional Council Public Transport Team Leader said.
Together with the government, the transport company has invested USD 430 million to modernise the fleet.
The train upgrade project began in 2007 with 24 refurbished carriages on the Wairarapa service costing USD 25million and Matangi units began arriving in 2010.
In 2015-2016, rail trips across the region increase to 12.8 million passengers.
