Transport Minister Dinh La Thang has asked its subordinated agencies to revise the plan for the construction of a north-south express railway, which was rejected five years ago because of cost concerns. The revised plan could be submitted for approval within the next five years.
The project foresees the construction of a double-track railway with a maximum speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in 2020. The line could be put into operation as soon as 2030, and by 2050 the speed limit will be increased to 350 kph.
The 900 km rail line might be build in just one phase or it could be divided into two sections: Hanoi and Vinh Town in the central province of Nghe An, and the central resort town of Nha Trang and HCMC.
The current railway will be upgraded from now till 2020, so it can handle train speeds at 80-90 kph compared to the current 50 kph.
