Uzbekistan has completed a project for the electrification of the Marokand-Karshi railway line in the south of the country. Its length is 140.8 kilometers, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari (Uzbekistan Railways) announced.
The Afrosiyob high-speed train made its first trip along the Tashkent-Samarkand-Karshi route on August 22.
“Until now, passenger trains were running on the Tashkent-Karshi route with a distance of 511 kilometers within six hours,” a statement said. “But Afrosiyob trains are running this distance on electrified sections faster now. The travel time is now reduced to three hours.”
The project also envisages reconstruction of the locomotive depot at Karshi.
The Chinese Corporation for Trade and Economic Cooperation (CNTIC) and the U.S. Belam Inc., will supply equipment for the electrification of the Marokand – Karshi railway in Uzbekistan totaling USD 82 million.
CNTIC will supply equipment for transformer substations and contact network under a contract totaling USD 28.87 million and Belam Inc. will supply almost USD 50 million worth equipment for alarm systems, including centralization and blocking in a SCADA system worth USD 3.1 million.
In total, the USD 234.7 million worth project is being financed by a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) amounting to USD100 million, the equity of Uzbekistan Railways in the amount of USD 110.92 million and state budget.
