On the basis of the recommendation from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, the budget for 2016 recommends the sum of 20 million dollars (17.6 million euros) for the completion of Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART)’s rail extension. The extension Downtown San Rafael – Larkspur has an estimated value of 40 million dollars. Another 20 million dollars for the project will come from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. “This Small Starts grant means that SMART will become a truly regional mode of transportation connecting the ferry in Marin to the airport in Sonoma,” Judy Arnold Chair of SMART said.
