The Charlotte City Council has plans for extending the CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar. Phase 2 will cost about $150 million which includes construction and new streetcars. Phase 2 will also add 11 more stops and extend the Gold Line to four miles.
Next month, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will start the search for construction contractors. The extension is planned to be completed by August 2020.
Phase 1 of the project exceeded all rider projections. Over the past year, the Gold Line averaged 1,601 trips a day each week with 459,819 total passenger trips from July 2015 to June 2016. Currently, Gold Line service is free but when phase two is complete, it will cost riders $2.20 a trip.
