Complete assets of the 25-mile short-line Mississippian Railway connecting Itawamba and Monroe counties has been transferred to the newly-created Itawamba County Rail Authority.
The railroad is owned by Itawamba County and has been managed for more than 30 years by the Mississippian Railway Cooperative. The latter has turned over management of the railway to the new authority, plus approximately USD 180,000 in assets, including a diesel engine, equipment and cash.
“We have run the railroad for the benefit of its customers and to further economic development in Itawamba County. This has been achieved without any cost to Itawamba County taxpayers. Now, however, returning management to the Rail Authority will create opportunities for loans and grants for improvements that would not be available to the Cooperative,” said Larry Homan, president of the Mississippian Railway Cooperative.
