The US Federal Railroad Administration will enforce the 31 December deadline for commuter and freight railroads to install safety technology. The announcement was made by Sarah Feinberg, acting chief of the US Federal Railroad Administration, in front of a House subcommittee.
Unless the US Congress acts to extend the deadline, the Federal Railroad Administration will require railroads to install the positive train control systems by the end of the year. Failure to meet the deadline could bring fines of up to $25,000 per day.
The US Congress mandated in 2008 that Amtrak, commuter railroads and freight railroads install positive train control by the end of this year.
