Ukrainian national rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia has completed more than half of the Beskyd railway tunnel through the Carpathian Mountains. Ukrzaliznytsia has bored 900m of the 1,765m tunnel. The 10.5m wide, 8.5m high tunnel is being built at a depth of 180m.
The new electrified two-track tunnel will replace the only remaining single-track section of the railway corridor between Lviv and the Hungarian and Slovak borders, accounting for over half of the entire transit flow of goods between Ukraine and Europe.
Last year, Ukraine secured a €55M loan from the European Investment Bank to finance the tunnel construction.
