Ukraine plans to launch a freight train to Iran in a bid to boost bilateral agricultural trade, the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry announced. Ukraine and Iran have agreed to launch a freight train that will transport agriculture products between the countries, particularly grain crops.
Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelian also called on the Iranian side to consider the possibility of transporting the Iranian oil to Ukraine, as well as prospects of building an oil refinery in Ukraine.
According to Minister Omelian, the rail route will pass through the territory of Georgia and Azerbaijan.
“This is an extremely promising direction of cooperation for the both countries. Ukraine should develop new international transport corridors in order to become a reliable transit bridge between the countries of Europe, Asia and the East,” the minister said.
He also noted that the test train on the Ukraine-Iran route could be launched as early as in the summer of 2017.
Also in 2017, Ukraine also intends to launch a freight train to China using the rail-sea trans-Caspian International Transport Route through Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
