The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has presented the military vehicle transport wagon – the Uais wagon – developed by the Turkish rolling stock manufacturer Türasaş. According to company’s plans, the delivery of the wagons to the Turkish Armed Forces will take place in 2025 after the final tests are completed.
“The project is of strategic importance and is implemented with local and national resources to meet the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces. Our priority in the project is not to produce an economical or versatile vehicle, but rather to design and manufacture wagon for military vehicles, primarily the Altay tank [Turkish fourth generation main battle tank]. The wagon will ensure that the operations to be carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces can be carried out in a healthy manner within the framework of national security principles,” the minister said.
The preliminary design studies of the Uais wagon have been completed considering the requirements of TSIs for components to meet international interoperability
The Uais type military vehicle transport wagon will be used by Turkish Armed Forces but also can be used in NATO missions abroad.
The concept design study were carried out by considering the weights and dimensions of the M60T, Korkut, Samur and Kirpi vehicles [types of resistant armored and tank vehicles used by the army], which have the highest narrow and widest gauge dimensions planned to be transported, especially the Altay Tank version-1 and version-2, with the Uai type military vehicle transport wagon within the scope of the demands of the Turkish Armed Forces. “In addition, the vehicle has been designed to meet the requirements of TCDD that can use the wagon in container transport in order to be used outside of military vehicle transport periods,” the minister said.
It is technically possible to realise the 40 and 45 container transport scenario with the Uais wagon and due to TSI regulations, the rail vehicle can be used by NATO.
The wagon can transport 78 of the 104 military vehicles currently in the Turkish Armed Forces inventory.
The prototype manufacturing works of the military vehicle transport wagon was completed at Türasaş Sivas Regional Directorate and was presented during a meeting held in November 2023 with the participation of all project stakeholders.
Static tests and tank loading tests have been successfully completed within the scope of the welded manufacturing phase of the wagon and TSI certification studies. “Currently manufacturing process continues and after the completion of the braking installation the dynamic tests will be carried out within the scope of the relevant standards,” Abdulkadir Uraloğlu explained.
