Transportation, Maritime and Communication Minister Lütfi Elvan announced that the first national high speed train, which was designed by Turkish engineers, will start running in 2019 after all the industrial and engineering designs are completed.
Elvan further said that a tender will soon be opened for the manufacture of 80 high speed trains and that the condition to enter the tender will be companies to have 53 percent capability. Another condition to enter the tender will be for the manufacturing of the trains to take place in Turkey and the third condition is that companies can only enter the tender together with a local partner that will have a 20 percent share. Elvan said that the local partner condition was set because the ministry wants continuity.
