The new contract refers to the commercial operation, for a period of nine years, by Trenitalia of rail passenger transport services on the island of Sardinia. It was signed by Sardinia Governor, Francesco Pigliaru and the managing director of Trenitalia, Barbara Morgante.
Sardinia will pay annually to Trenitalia the sum of EUR 43 million for operating 180 daily trains, which will serve 43 stations.
Being valid until 2025, the contract amounts to EUR 513 million. At the same time, investments of EUR 123.4 million are needed, of which EUR 114 million will be provided by Trenitalia and the remaining EUR 9.4 million will be provided by the Government of Sardinia.
The main objective of these investments is the renewal of the rolling stock fleet. Thus, Trenitalia will acquire 10 Swing diesel multiple units, DMUs, from the Polish manufacturer Pesa. These will be delivered in 2018.
Eight new-generation diesel multiple units will also be purchased. The eight DMUs will be operational on the Italian island rail network starting 2020-2021.
Of these, two Minuetto DMUs, produced by Alstom specifically for Trenitalia, entered the commercial service to supplement Trenitalia’s rolling stock fleet for Sardinia.
