Train collision in Wales: One dead, 15 injured

A man has died and 15 others have been taken to hospital following a train collision in Wales on Monday night. Two trains collided on the railway line near the village of Llanbrynmair in Mid Wales, BBC reports.

Police confirmed the death of one man and said 15 other people were taken to hospital with injuries. “Unfortunately, we confirm the death of a man, following the collision. His next of kin have been informed and his family are being supported by specialist officers,” Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said.

First responder officials said all other passengers on the two trains were evacuated.

The train collision happened near the village of Llanbrynmair, in Powys, at around 19:30 BST on Monday.

The incident involved the 18.31 Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.

According to authorities, the Cambrian Railway west of Machynlleth will remain closed until specialist crews complete their investigation into the accident.

Ifan Edwards, a witness who lives near the scene of the crash, said he saw a number of ambulances passing, an air ambulance and two Coast Guard helicopters.

He said it appeared that one of the trains had failed to stop in the normal place on a hill “and from what we can gather he just slid and he couldn’t stop the train”.

Network Rail and Transport for Wales, in a joint statement, said they were extremely grateful to the emergency services who helped passengers and staff to evacuate.

“My thoughts are with everyone involved in the rail incident in Powys tonight,” Wales First Minister Eluned Morgan wrote on X.
