Thailand’s Ministry of Transport is now setting up a ministerial work group which is expected to complete and have its first meeting soon with Japan.
Thai Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, and Japan premier, Shinzo Abe, agreed to speed up the cooperation on rail track system development in accordance with the earlier Memorandum of Intent signed.
In February, the two countries agreed to further develop the strategic partnership, pledging to deepen economic cooperation to develop Thailand’s railway networks and promote a special economic zone in Southeast Asia.
The two prime ministers signed the “Memorandum of Intent on Cooperation of the Railway Sector” on the study and development of 3 rail routes (urgent phase) in Thailand which would connect both East-West and North-South Economic Corridors.
Thai Government proposed a joint-venture model to Japan for collaboration in building Thai railroads running high-speed trains.
