Thailand approves the high speed rail link to China

Thailand’s Cabinet approved this week the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima high speed railway project under Thailand-China rail cooperation, which will be put into operation in 2021.
The USD 5.2 billion (THB 179 billion) project involves the construction of a 252 km high speed line, with 6 stations, linking China’s southern city of Kunming with Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
“The construction of the rail project between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima will be completed by 2021 and Thailand will largely benefit from it in the long run,” Thai Prime Minister Prayut said.
The Bangkok- Nakhon Ratchasima section is only the first phase of the Thailand-China rail project.
Under the second phase, railway line will be constructed from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai province.
The high speed rail is designed to link with China-Laos railway to form a railway corridor from southwest China’s Kunming to Bangkok.
“The second phase or the high speed rail between Nakhon Ratchasima and Nong Khai will be built to link Thailand with Laos and China,” Prayut explained.
