Tel Aviv: Hurdles for development of future light rail lines

04-tel avivThe Tel Aviv municipality raised numerous objections to forthcoming work on the Green and Purple light rail lines. Among the objections, the city officials have mentioned that the lands will be appropriated without compensation to residents and without a mechanism to assure that the building rights would not be transferred. Furthermore, the officials claim, the land required to prepare for the construction will destroy the public parks. The current plans do not account for intermodality with other public transportation modes and are not integrated in the development strategy of the city.
The Tel Aviv municipality asked for the work areas to be cut down, alternative areas to be considered that cause minimal damage to public parks, and an environmental impact study to be conducted.
The Green Line will connect the south and north of the city. The Purple Line will connect the eastern outskirts to the center.
