Tasmania plans new bridge and light rail projects

06-tasmaniaAmong the priorities of Infrastructure Tasmania for the  new financial year are the stalled Bridgewater Bridge project and a plan for light rail, according to its new CEO Allan Garcia.
Tasmanian projects are at risk of being overlooked by the Federal Government for funding and the company would place special focus on an unfunded, multi-million-dollar plan to replace the Bridgewater Bridge north of Hobart, and on a review of the need for a light rail service between Hobart and Glenorchy, said Allan Garcia.
Tasmania could miss out from Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s promised infrastructure investments if it did not improve its coordination of major projects, explained Allan Garcia. “Unfortunately, some of the activity’s been targeted towards Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane,” he said. Infrastructure Australia currently focuses only on projects worth at least $100 million, although it is considering taking on smaller projects in Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
