Starting September 1, the tram line extension linking the subdistrict of Ülemiste and Tallinn airport is put into commercial service. The tram line uses Ülemiste station that will be a future terminal under Rail Baltica project.
“I believe that those who want to go from the Baltic station to the suburban train, if they do not want to fly to Tallin airport, can go to the suburban train services where the number 4 tram rides, ” said Enno Tamm, the supervisory board chairman of Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS, the city’s transport company.
The EUR 12.5 million project was 85 percent financed by the EU (9.8 million) with the rest of the necessary funding being covered by the city of Tallinn.
The construction of the extension of the number 4 tram line to Tallinn Airport began in spring 2016.
As part of Rail Baltica’s Ülemiste terminal, in April 2017 RB Rail AS announced the tender for the “Feasibility and technical framework study for a rail bound (light rail or tram) connection from RB Ülemiste passenger terminal to TEN-T core network Tallinn passenger port (Old city Harbour / Vanasadam)”. The tender involves the elaboration a study in order to pre-design an optimal solution, from a technical and economic standpoint, for the connection between Vanasadam and Rail Baltica.
