Taiwan: international bids to be sought for new train cars

Taiwan High Speed Rail intends to launch an international tender for its upcoming purchase of new train cars. Bidders may need to submit statements to Taiwan High Speed Rail’s board outlining their plans for providing the train cars. Improving technology means factors such as environmental friendliness and parts maintenance will be assessed for the next generation of high-speed rail cars, the company said.
Taiwan’s bullet train began operation in 2007, using rail cars, signal systems and tracks produced by a consortium of seven Japanese companies including Mitsui & Co., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy. All 34 of Taiwan High Speed Rail’s current bullet train cars were produced by Japanese companies like Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi and Nippon Sharyo.
