Czech rail infrastructure manager SŽDC finalised the second stage of the modernization of Břeclav railway junction. The shape of this important railway junction near the border with Austria and Slovakia changed considerably during the last few years. The Břeclav railway station for passengers was reconstructed first; at the same time, the southern and northern part of the station underwent construction adaptations simultaneously as well as the station forecourt.
More than five kilometres of new tracks connected by 67 switches with electrical heating were lain. Moreover, using seamless rails resulted in much smoother train rides and thus in much higher travelling comfort. The project also included complete reconstruction of the overhead line.
The construction’s investor was the Railway Infrastructure Administration and its supplier was the Association of technology of Břeclav Railway Station consisting of companies Elektrizace železnic Praha and AŽD Praha.
The project was co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport. The EU contribution amounted to 709 million CZK (EUR 25.8 million) from a total sum of planned costs amounting to 1.032,243,337 CZK (EUR 37.6 million). National resources were provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
