The Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca awarded Systra-Metrans consortium a project management consultancy (PMC) contract to supervise the design and construction of the first line of Cluj automatic metro system.
“We are delighted to be able to contribute to this major project for Romania. The cooperation of our teams and the invaluable support of our longstanding partners, as well as the local relationships forged over the years, were key factors in winning this bid,” Elisabeth Varvarian, Bid Manager, International Tenders & Services at Systra, said.
In May 2023, the Cluj-Napoca City Hall and the consortium of Gulermak, Alstom and Arcada, signed the contract for the construction of the first phase of Cluj automatic metro network. The project is expected to be completed in 2031 when is expected to be used daily by more than 164,000 passengers.
The construction works for the line have been launched in June 2024 and include a 9.16 km section with 9 stations from Sfânta Maria to Europa Unită plaza including the construction of the depot.
The second phase of the metro project in Cluj-Napoca involves the construction of a 12 km line with 10 stations which will be split into two sections (8.8 km and 3 km) to provide connections to two destinations.
The entire line will be 21 km long served by 19 underground stations and one depot, with the first seven stations expected to enter commercial operation from 2026. When completed, the line will be operated by 26 three-car trains.
The metro project has a total value of EUR 2.7 billion of which EUR 293.4 million is covered by the European funding through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), EUR 2 billion is the financing provided by the state budget while EUR 8 million will be provided by local authorities.
In the north-west of Romania, at the foot of the Western Carpathians, Cluj-Napoca is a major cultural and university centre with a wealth of Baroque and Gothic architecture. With almost 400,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area, Cluj is counting on the metro to continue its growth.
