Swiss rolling stock producer Stadler has begun the dynamic testing phase of the first Giruno electruc multiple unit (EMU) for the Swiss Railways (SBB). The tests are carried out at the VUZ Velim Testing Center in the Czech Republic. In Switzerland, Giruno will run on the intercity network.
The train, consisting of 11 units and able of running at 250 km/h, will be subject to an extensive test program in the coming weeks. Stadler therefore seeks to obtain an authorisation to place into service (APS) for the operation of the rolling stock fleet in Switzerland and a supplementary authorisation to place into service (SAPS) for Germany, Austria and Italy.
SBB placed a CHF 980 million (EUR 885 million) to Stadler in October 2014 for the delivery of 29 electric multiple units, each consisting of 11 units, with an option to deliver another 92 additional units. The multi-system EMUs will initially operate on the Basel / Zürich – Milan route through the Gotthard tunnel, entering commercial operation from 2019 onwards.
