The Swiss rolling stock manufacturer, Stadler, intends to build a tram factory in St. Petersburg and, in this regard, has held talks with the municipality to identify a space for the future plant.
Stadler proposed to the municipality of Sankt Petersburg the conclusion of an offset contract whereby the rolling stock manufacturer would pay the entire cost of building the tram plant and instead the municipality should guarantee that it will purchase, on a 10-year period, certain quantity of the locally produced vehicles, writes the Russian newspaper Kommersant.
We remind that on August 9, St. Petersburg’s public transport operator, Gorelektrotrans, started the tests with the Metelitsa trams, short version, renamed by Chizhik. They were manufactured at the Stadler’s plant in Fanipol, near Minsk, the capital of Belarus, which is also the closest plant for the Central and Eastern Europe and CIS countries.
The contract was signed for a total of 23 such trams. They will be operated under a concession contract. Meantime, the construction of a new network has been estimated at a value of RUB 33.7 billion (EUR 429 million).
