French rail operator SNCF and ECR Retail Systems have completed phase one of a project to deploy real-time mobile payment technology across SNCF’s entire fleet of trains. ECR has deployed its mobile point of sale (MPoS) solution across SNCF’s entire fleet, including the delivery of nearly 1,500 lightweight ECR Go handheld devices, thus marking the end of the first phase of a three year project.
The agreement will enable SNCF’s catering providers, Newrest Wagons-Lits (Newrest), to manage the entire sales and stock management process across all rail journeys by the end of the project.
Phase two of the project will enable Newrest to transition towards a system that automates and improves the current paper-based stock management process, and enable greater control, predictability, traceability and management of stock. This is expected to save time for staff and reduce human error.
ECR was selected for the project because its technology offers capabilities for handling mobile payments via cash and card, is designed for managing the complex nature of on-board payments within rail and because of its capability to support the wider requirements to better manage stock and business analytics over time.
