Singapore’s Land Transport authority (LTA) has awarded Hitachi Rail, in consortium with Strides Engineering, the comprehensive renewal of CCTV network across the North – South and East – West lines (NSEWL). Covering more than 50 stations, the project aims to enhance the CCTV network infrastructure and camera capacity across Singapore’s oldest and most heavily utilised metro lines.
At its core, the upgrade features a centralised video management system (VMS) and video transmission network (VTN) to manage both new and existing cameras across all the stations of the two lines.
Hitachi Rail will provide the overall system solution and Strides Engineering will conduct the physical deployment. The combined expertise will ensure each station is equipped with state-of-the-art security technology that is seamlessly integrated into the Operations Control Centre.
“Our partnership with Strides Engineering forms a strong team to ensure high level of customer commitment. Our CCTV solution will enhance security on Singapore’s oldest and most heavily used lines,” Tang Yu Feng, General Manager of Hitachi Rail GTS Singapore, said.
On Singapore’s NSEWL, Hitachi Rail is also delivering the signalling system renewal, a project commissioned in 2017 for the North – South Line, followed by the East – West Line in 2018. This is one of the largest re-signalling projects in the world. With this new CCTV project, NSEWL will be further enhanced in operational efficiency for CCTV monitoring and passenger safety, marking a step forward in the evolution of Singapore’s public transport infrastructure.
Since 2012 until 2023, LTA has implemented its comprehensive upgrade and renewal programme for the North – South and East – West lines, including the installation of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and new power supply system.
In 2018, LTA ordered 66 trains from Bombardier (now Alstom) to progressively replace the rolling stock operating the two lines, and in 2020 an additional fleet of 40 new trains has been ordered also for NSEWL lines. From 2026, the fleet operating the lines will be new.
