Serbia wants to invest in railway infrastructure, in order to increase its market share and will invest EUR 2.5 billion. “The value of existing projects is more than EUR 2.5 billion, and the construction of the Belgrade – Budapest almost EUR 1 billion,” Transport Minister Zorana Mihajlovic said.
At the end of 2015, the newly formed “Infrastructure Railways of Serbia” the railway infrastructure manager, and RZD International signed a new contract for the modernization of Resnik – Valjevo railway line. The USD 80 million contract involves the modernisation of 77.6 km of rail section, that links the Adriatic Basin with the Pan-European Corridor 10.
Works are expected to start this March and will be completed in 14 months. The project will be performed in two phases.
In addition, on November 2015, Serbia signed a contract with China to construct and revamp a rail link between Budapest and Belgrade, one of the most important Serbian infrastructure project.
Until 2018, Serbia plans to modernise 500 km of railway lines, allowing trains to run 120 km/h.
