The new railway that will cross Zurich and whose construction requires CHF 2 Billion (EUR 1.6 Billion) creates problems for the intercity trains. The first underground part of the railway is already opened to the traffic of regional trains, but the first tests on the railway bridge built between Oerlikon and Altstetten have revealed an unexpected problem. The engines of the intercity trains are not strong enough to haul trains on the bridge without causing traffic delays.
In order to solve the problem, SBB will apply a temporary solution: it will equip the trains that connect Romanshorn to Brigue, as well as Saint-Gall and Genève by two locomotives. The situation will come back to normal at the end of 2015, when SBB will introduce the new double-decked trains that have stronger engines.
