RZD revised its heavy-haul operations strategy and the document outlining it has been forwarded to the Ministry of Transport for approval. The plan encompasses the period until 2020. Under the new strategy, train weight is to be increased from the current 6,000 tons to 7,100 and, further on, to 9,000 tons.
RZD is targeting North-West, South and Far East as heavy-haul operation centers. To cope with the plans, the company needs to buy 1,508 locomotives in 2015-2017 (195 more locomotives than in the previously announced plans) for 214 B RUR (3.3 B USD). The total amount of the investments required under the strategy was not disclosed.
