Russian Deputy Transport Minister Oleg Belozerov has replaced Vladimir Yakunin as head of Russian Railways, ITAR TASS news agency reported citing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Yakunin announced his plan to leave the post to become a senator in the upper chamber of the Russian parliament for the Kaliningrad region, a Russian exclave located between Lithuania and Poland. Yakunin had headed Russian Railways for 10 years.
Belozerov’s appointment to the post was earlier predicted by several sources in Kommersant newspaper. Vedomosti newspaper also included Belozerov in a list of possible candidates for the new head of Russian Railways, citing a source at the company.
“Together with the Russian Railways team, we must focus on continuing to improve the efficiency of the company, including its socially-oriented activity, the transport of freight and increasing the speed of movement,” Belozerov stressed at the meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, sputniknews.com reports.
When announcing his decision, Medvedev urged Belozerov to pay particular attention to the company budget, investments and passenger transportation.
