Russian Deputy Prime Minister supports Moscow-Saint Petersburg HSR project

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov said he supported the potential construction of Moscow-Saint Petersburg HSR project. Akimov believes that the Russian Government, through the decision of supporting such a railway, could decongest air traffic to Moscow.
“I find attractive the idea of a high-speed railway between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The HSR would ease the heavy traffic between the two cities. However, if built, the railway should not delay the implementation of Moscow-Kazan project, which is also a high-speed railway. Regarding the latter, we are already prepared to launch the project. Concerning the possibility of a new Moscow-Saint Petersburg high-speed railway, we do not have a document yet, not even a feasibility study. I support both projects, but in order to build Moscow-Saint Petersburg railway, first we must launch the design phase”, declared Akimov, quoted by Tass Agency.
Moscow-Saint Petersburg railway should have been the first high-speed railway in Russia, but in 2013 the construction project was postponed indefinitely.
Currently, preparations are made to build the first section of Moscow-Kazan railway. According to the latest data, this first section, Zheleznodorozhny (Moscow region) – Gorokhovets (Vladimir region), could be completed by the end of 2024. The first phase, for which the design has already been completed, envisages the construction of a 301-km section on Zheleznodorozhny- Gorokhovets route where trains could travel at 400 km/h.
