Under the updated version of the General Development Plan, Russian Railways will build 1,200 km of new railway lines up to 2020 and another 750 km by 2025.
Taking into account the international role of railways, the Plan provides for the development of infrastructure on the East – West and North – South International Transport Corridors (ITCs).
Additional activities under the Plan include the development of railway border crossings and the construction of a network of transport and logistics centres. It is also planned to deepen cooperation with foreign transport companies and implement joint rail transport development projects.
Looking ahead to 2025, the document provides for the construction of 5,000 km of additional main track, the installation of self-locking equipment on 1,800 km of track and the electrification of 1,100 km.
The General Development Plan includes a forecast that freight traffic will increase by almost 17% and freight turnover by 13%. As a result of all the measures contained in the document, passenger turnover on rail transport should increase by 11% by 2020.
According to Alexei Tsydenov, Russia’s Deputy Transport Minister, the General Development Plan is sufficiently mature and realistic, and should be adopted as soon as possible.
The General Development Plan will be used as the basis for adjusting the “Railway Transport Development Strategy until 2030” in terms of infrastructure development.
It was decided to revise the General Development Plan within a month after the proposals put forward at the meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council have been taken into account.
