Oradea Transport Local S.A. (OTL), Oradea public transport operator and CESi Automation Craiova, member of Spiact Craiova, presented a technically upgraded Tatra tram.
The project included the replacement of the accelerator, generator and of other elements of the tram aimed to significantly reduce energy consumption.
Through the new system, energy consumption is reduced to less than half compared to the traction system that equips the rest of the tram units thus reducing exploitation costs. With the modernisation of the traction system, the tram command desk was also upgraded to be compatible with the new system.
“We have installed this equipment that ensures an improved supply of the direct current engines of the tram. What is also new is that the system ensures the recovery of the electric energy when possible, transforming the engine into a generator”, declared Laurentiu Dinu, manager of Spiact Craiova.
The tram has been equipped with air-conditioning and the seats have been replaced.
Apart from the modernisation of the tram supply system and of the interiors, a folding ramp has been installed to facilitate de access of disabled passengers. Also, as an experiment, a bicycle rack was mounted at the end of the tram. „Passengers who want to carry their bikes with this tram will announce the tram driver when mounting and when removing their bicycle on/off the rack in order to avoid unpleasant incidents”, OTL explained.
OTL plans to renew the rolling stock fleet including either the modernisation of the 40 old trams or the procurement of new trams. However, the re-technologisation of a vehicle would cost around EUR 35,000, and if the whole vehicle was upgraded, the bodycase included, costs would amount to EUR 400,000.
OTL’s rolling stock fleet includes 73 units of which 10 Siemens ULF trams and 63 Tatra trams (of two types: 53 Tatra T4D+B4D and 10 Tatra KT4D).
According to OTL, the upgraded tram will begin services as of today, as tests have already been completed.
