The representatives of Timisoara Municipality estimate the cost of a new tram at EUR 2.5 million.
To support the initiation of the new project, the Local Council of Timisoara Municipality approved the opportunity study for the procurement of new trams and the modernisation of Dambovita tram depot. Currently, Timisioara has a fleet of 60 trams. 15 of them have already been modernised (the Armonia trams), while other 15 are under modernisation in the production units of some Romanian companies, such as Astra Vagoane Calatori and Electroputere VFU Pascani.
The approved study shows that 30 new multi-articulated low-floor trams will be bought to complete the difference up to 60 such vehicles.
Timisoara Municipality plans to attract non-reimbursable funds through the Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020 to finance the new trams and to upgrade the depot. Thus, the Municipality has elaborated the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (PMUD), and in September 2017 it elaborated the supporting document for financing from structural European funds. The project contributes to sustainable development by increasing the attractiveness and popularity of the public transport system encouraging people to use public transport instead of personal vehicles and thus, reducing CO2 emissions.
The opportunity study has been elaborated by the operator to identify the technical and economic indicators.
Timisoara Municipality estimates that both the procurement of new trams and the modernisation of the depot will be concluded by 2020.
