The City of Arad, Romania, intends using the proceeds of a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the procurement of trams and rehabilitation of tram depot. The total value of the project is EUR 9.4 million and out of the loan proceeds only the procurement and installation of tram depot equipment remained to be purchased.
Tendering for the contract is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2017.
According to the city’s mayor, Gheorghe Falca, declarations (in 2016), the 2017-2023 operational budget is estimated at EUR 238 million of which EUR 66 million will be offered through European funds. Under the development programme, among others, the city intends to invest in its tram system through the acquisition of the rolling stock and the modernisation of the network.
In 2014, the first two new ‘Imperio’ trams, produced by Astra Vagoane Calatori Arad were put into operation. The local transport company, CTP Arad, has purchased 6 new trams, and intends to buy a new batch of trams by 2023.
