Sources in the Saudi government say that tenders for the 958km double tracked line between Riyadh and Jeddah will be awarded next year. Meanwhile the tenders for the rail links connecting Jubail will be awarded later this year. The 958km Riyadh – Jeddah line will be entirely funded by the Saudi government. Though no assements were made on how much it is likely to cost, the Saudi government is reassessing its 20 billion riyal budget even now. The two lines will be constructed by four consortia in four separate tenders. The design contract has already been awarded, and once finalised the construction can begin. Prequalification will begin for rolling stock and signalling and communications will begin shortly after construction begins.
