An agreement has been reached between all capital area municipalities to create a light rail system for the greater Reykjavík region.
RÚV reports that the agreement more clearly defines protected wetlands in the capital area, and also outlines some key planning ideas. Amongst these, the creation of a light rail system is the paramount project.
Dubbed the City Line, the plan behind the light rail system is to connect the centres of every municipality in the capital area to each other. In so doing, it is hoped that the City Line will not only encourage more people to use mass transit, but also that the line itself will help in the development of jobs and homes in the greater Reykjavík area.
The announcement comes just months after plans for a Keflavík-Reykjavík rail system were unveiled. It is estimated that this train will take about 10 years to complete.
